  1. A case of good time party music, albeit clearly overshadowed by its creators' historical importance. Far beyond the novelty of 's "Last Night," some of the Mar-Keys went on to immortalize themselves as the solid backbone of Southern soul in its prime. As can be learned from editor Robert Gordon's It Came from Memphis, most of the original members weren't allowed to play on the first two.

  2. The Mar-Keys are a great Southern soul band, and this is a great album -- a very fun half-hour. Honey Pot, Grab This Thing, Philly Dog are all high points; their read on Girl From Ipanema is nice adds a new viewpoint to a well-loved standard. But the amazing track is Plantation Inn.
